Rule 15 - “Is Virtual” Determination Rules for Intune

Rule Synopsis

These are the rule/s that control how CI Sync determines if an incoming record (e.g. a physical device or a virtual resource) is virtual or physical and as a result sets the related attribute on the CMDB CI record.

Rule Details and Default

  • For existing Syncfish customers up to June 2026

    • By default, CI Sync has assumed all records from InTune are not virtual (i.e. are physical devices such as iPhones, iPads, Android devices, Windows PCs and Apple Macs).

    For NEW Syncfish customers from July 2026 and onwards

    • By default, CI Sync uses smart logic to dynamically determine whether a given InTune device/resource is virtual or physical.

Please read the Additional Information section further below for important information about ServiceNow business rule/s that may impact the value of the Is_Virtual attribute beyond solely what CI Sync is doing.

Override Options

Context

For existing Syncfish customers up to June 2026

  • Customers may consider overriding the historical default rule (which treats all InTune devices/resources as physical) if they have introduced virtual resources such as Microsoft Cloud PCs into InTune.

For NEW Syncfish customers from July 2026 and onwards

  • Customers may consider overriding the new default rule (which uses smart logic to dynamically determine whether a given InTune device/resource is virtual or physical) if they do NOT want CI Sync to perform the virtual vs physical determination (e.g. if they solely want ServiceNow do this).

Options

  1. For existing Syncfish customers up to June 2026

    1. This Data Sync Rule can be overridden so that CI Sync uses smart logic to dynamically determine whether a given InTune device/resource is virtual or physical.

    For NEW Syncfish customers from July 2026 and onwards

    1. This Data Sync Rule can be overridden so that CI Sync assumes all records from InTune are not virtual (i.e. are physical devices such as iPhones, iPads, Android devices, Windows PCs and Apple Macs).

Overriding via Connection Settings

Customers can perform the override using a “Connection Setting” via the CI Sync User Interface (i.e. customers can perform the overrides themselves). Additional information for this is available via the following documentation:
